'What some might call beauty, I find monstrous'
In the age of the Faerie Queene, Elizabeth I, Lord Francis Rodermere starts to lay waste to a forest.
Furious, the sorceress who dwells there scrawls a curse into the bark of the first oak he fells:
A faerie boy will be born to you whose beauty will be your death.
Ten years later, Lord Rodermere’s son, Beau is born – and all who encounter him are struck by his great beauty.
Meanwhile, many miles away in a London alchemist’s cellar lives Randa – a beast deemed too monstrous to see the light of day.
And so begins a timeless tale of love, tragedy and revenge…

My review...
What a complete triumph! Wray Delaney (Sally Gardner) proves that fairytales are 'not of an age, but for all time' in this clever, gender reverse, re-telling of the tale we all know as Beauty and the Beast. As with fairytales as a whole this book tackles important issues that don't just traverse the boundaries of time, but highlight relevant topics of this day and age. Thus allowing the moral and cultural current of the piece to shine through and deliver an important note.
The lyrical prose bursts with illuminating beauty from the opening paragraph and takes you on a magical journey of vivid imagery and descriptive language. The detailed writing was certainly a standout area of this piece as a whole. The plot was filled with twists and turns which weaved a spell before my eyes in a way that dazzled and enchanted and I was enraptured by it's powerful message and lyrical charms.
The Beauty of the Wolf is a shinning example of how powerful the written word is and the importance of what a strong message can deliver. This is certainly one book you do not want to miss out on this year that's for sure.
